On Thursday, 26 May, an event will be held at the Saeima to celebrate the new lilac variety that was selected at the Institute of Horticulture to commemorate the centenary of the Saeima.
The event will be opened by Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, and it will be attended by the Presidium and MPs of the Saeima, as well as Inese Ebele, Director of the Institute of Horticulture, and Sarmīte Strautiņa, Head Researcher at the Institute and the creator of the lilac variety dedicated to the centenary of the Saeima. The event will also feature a musical performance by a Dobele Music School student.
The Institute of Horticulture will receive a plaque from the Saeima, containing a description of the new lilac variety, which has been named “Brīve” (“Freedom”). After the event, the plaque will be located by the lilac plant of the new variety at the Lilac Garden of the Institute of Horticulture in Dobele.
The “Freedom” variety, dedicated to the centenary of the Saeima, conveys a symbolic message about our country’s greatest values—freedom, independence, and democracy. A stylised lilac flower in the centre, surrounded by the semicircle-shaped amphitheatre of the Parliament, is also featured in the celebratory logo of the centenary of the Saeima.
On 7 November 1922, the 1st Saeima convened for its first sitting, also bringing into force the fundamental law of Latvia—the Constitution (Satversme).
The ceremony in celebration of the lilac variety commemorating the centenary of the Saeima will take place on 26 May at 12:40 in the Grand Vestibule of the Saeima, Jēkaba iela 11.
