“It is essential for the international community to strongly insist on respect for international law in relations between states. Russia’s war in Ukraine affects the global economy and threatens the global democratic order,” emphasised Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, on Wednesday 6 March, meeting in the Latvian parliament with Jacob Francis Nzwidamilimo Mudenda, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Zimbabwe. This is a regional visit of the Zimbabwean Speaker who is visiting also Lithuania, Finland, and Sweden.

We need to protect and value freedom, justice and international law, and also respect international humanitarian law in order to put an end to human suffering, said the Zimbabwean Speaker Mudenda, and called for the joint promotion of peace and security in the world, expressing Zimbabwe’s support for interparliamentary cooperation efforts for comprehensive peace.

The Speaker of the Saeima expressed hopes to see Zimbabwe among the countries supporting the Peace initiative of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the upcoming conference on peace in Ukraine to be hosted in Switzerland. “The more countries join this initiative, the greater the chances of restoring a just and lasting peace,” said Speaker Mieriņa.

The Speaker of the Saeima underlined that the main current issue remains security in our region and around the world, highlighting the historical aspects of the actions of the aggressor state. “Russia’s stance and understanding stem only from the position of strength,” said Speaker Mieriņa, pointing out that negotiations with the aggressor state are not possible at the moment. The Speaker of the Saeima called for every effort to be made for Ukraine to win the war.

The Zimbabwean delegation expressed interest in Latvia’s experience in organising the electoral process, in the education system, as well as in the field of telecommunications development. The Speaker of the Saeima noted that Latvia is interested in strengthening parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. Latvia and Zimbabwe established diplomatic relations nine years ago.

The meeting was attended also by the Saeima’s Secretary Edvards Smiltēns, and the Chair of the Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee of the Saeima Skaidrīte Ābrama.
