“In Latvia, there is an understanding that peace in Europe can only be achieved with a complete victory for Ukraine and defeat for Russia. The Parliament of Latvia has always been on the side of Ukraine, and the support that we provide for Ukraine is also the support for Crimean Tatars. You can count on it,” said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, during her meeting with Refat Chubarov, Chair of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, and Olexandr Mischenko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of Latvia, on Tuesday, 6 September.

Chubarov thanked the people of Latvia for their support for Ukraine during its fight against Russian aggression. The Chair of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People also praised the unwavering support of the Saeima, emphasising that Latvia sets an example for other countries.

In 2019, the Saeima adopted a statement recognising the deportations of Crimean Tatars as genocide; the statements adopted this year recognise that Russia is committing genocide against the Ukrainian people and recognise Russia’s violence against civilians as terrorism.

Ināra Mūrniece and Refat Chubarov discussed the current situation in Crimea, including the human rights violations and the repressions committed by Russia against Crimean Tatars.

Both parties also discussed the preparations for the upcoming Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, in October. As stated by Chubarov, the agenda of the summit will focus on re-building Ukraine after the end of the war. It is necessary to find solutions to ensure that such aggression never happens again.

The Speaker of the Saeima highlighted that Russia’s aggression in Ukraine has brought the democratic states of the world closer than ever before. Ināra Mūrniece and Refat Chubarov both agreed that there can be no compromise concerning the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Support for Ukraine must continue until a complete victory is secured.
