Ināra Mūrniece: We appreciate the multifaceted Latvian-Uzbek cooperation

“We are pleased that the Latvian-Uzbek cooperation is becoming more extensive and extends to a variety of areas”. Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, stressed this on Tuesday, 16 May, at the Saeima, during a meeting with Nigmatilla Yuldashev, Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, who, accompanied by a delegation, was in Latvia on an official visit.

Speaker Mūrniece and Speaker Yuldashev praised the friendly relations between the two countries, extensive practical cooperation and active political dialogue, including at the parliamentary level. The Uzbek Speaker expressed his country's interest in learning from the experience of the Saeima in introducing the legislative process.

The Speaker of the Saeima expressed satisfaction with cooperation in the sphere of education. Latvia offers EU-level education, which is appreciated by students from Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is the country sending the highest number of foreign students to Latvia.

Mūrniece and Yuldashev discussed the successful economic cooperation and agreed on the importance of transit and transport. Speaker Mūrniece mentioned the positive example of the flight Tashkent–Riga–New York, stressing the importance of maintaining it in the future.

Uzbekistan is a large trade partner of Latvia, said the Speaker of the Saeima. We appreciate the reform plans of the new political leadership to improve the business and investment environment – that will contribute to our trade growth.

The Speaker of the Uzbek Senate thanked Latvia for its active efforts in promoting the European Union's cooperation with Central Asian countries. Mūrniece said that Latvia is committed to making the European Union more present in Uzbekistan.

Nigmatilla Yuldashev invited the Speaker of the Saeima to visit Uzbekistan.

The Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan was in Latvia from 15 to 18 May. Speaker Yuldashev was accompanied by Adham Shadmanov, Chairman of the Budget and Economic Reform Committee of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, Head of the Group for Cooperation with the Latvian Parliament; Alisher Kadirov, member of the Foreign Affairs and Interparliamentary Relations Committee of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis; and Ikbolzhon Mirzaaliyev, member of the Foreign Affairs, Foreign Economic Relations, Foreign Investment and Tourism Committee of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, member of the Group for Cooperation with the Latvian Parliament.
