On Wednesday, 26 March, receiving Salome Zourabichvili, the fifth president of Georgia, at the Latvian parliament, Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, affirmed Latvia’s support for the fight of the Georgian people, opposition, civil society, and independent media for democracy and justice in their country.

The Speaker of the Saeima pointed out that, throughout history, Latvia and Georgia have always enjoyed good relations, but they are facing a critical moment given the current developments in Georgia.

Zourabichvili thanked Latvia for supporting Georgia’s path to democracy and described the current political situation as well as the potential outcomes. The fifth president of Georgia underlined that the opposition, activists, and society alike are subject to the ruling power’s ongoing repressions.

As stressed by the Speaker of the Saeima, we acknowledge how fragile democracy can be, and the Georgian opposition’s ability to stand together and to unite people is currently an important factor for making it stronger.

Regarding Russia’s interference in the Georgian parliamentary elections, Zourabichvili urged to take Georgia’s experience into account, noting that Russia is using Georgia as a test subject and may repeat the same scenario in other countries. Other topics of discussion included the impact of disinformation and possibilities for Russia to undermine democratic processes through elements of hybrid warfare.

Antoņina Ņenaševa, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, and Edvards Smiltēns, Secretary of the Saeima, also participated in the meeting with the fifth president of Georgia.

Other MPs who met with Salome Zourabichvili today include Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima; Ināra Mūrniece, Chair of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee; and Edmunds Cepurītis, Chair of the Saeima European Affairs Committee.
