Chairs of European Affairs Committees from the Baltic States, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Poland to meet at the Saeima

On Tuesday, 20 May, the Saeima will host a meeting of the Chairs of the European Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of the Baltic States, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Poland.

The Committee Chairs will discuss European Union security and defence issues, as well as the Multiannual Financial Framework. In addition, participants will visit the Ādaži Military Base of the National Armed Forces and company BELSS—Latvia’s leading communications integrator for the defence sector.

Delegations from the European Affairs Committees of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Poland will also review the agenda of the upcoming Conference of the Chairs of the European Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC).

Participants will include Edmunds Cepurītis, Chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima; Tali Peeter, Chair of the European Union Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu of Estonia; Arminas Lydeka, Deputy Chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Seimas of Lithuania; Tomasz Grodzki, Chair of the European Union Affairs Committee of the Senate of Poland; and Patryk Gabriel, Member of the European Affairs Committee of the Sejm of Poland.

Also attending will be Brigitte Klintskov Jerkel, Chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Folketing of Denmark; Erik Ottoson, Chair of the Committee on European Union Affairs of the Riksdag of Sweden; and Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, Deputy Chair of the Grand Committee (European Affairs) of the Eduskunta of Finland, along with other delegates from the respective committees.

The meeting will be addressed by Edmunds Cepurītis, Chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima; Liene Gātere, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Defence; Jānis Sārts, Director of the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence (StratCom); Reinis Brusbārdis, Director of the EU Coordination and Policy Department; and Kārlis Bukovskis, Director of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs.

Traditionally, the Chairs of the European Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of the Baltic States and Poland meet twice a year to discuss current EU matters. This time, the format is expanded to include representatives from Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. Such meetings strengthen cooperation, foster the exchange of views, and help build consensus on policies aligned with national interests.
