On Tuesday, May 20, Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa, members of the Presidium and members of the Saeima visited the military base "Ceri", where they met with representatives of the Canadian contingent and learned about their development plans.
During her meeting with Canadian soldiers, the Speaker of the Saeima highlighted the excellent relations between Latvia and Canada, emphasising that the expansion of the Canadian military contingent confirms this positive dynamic. "We greatly appreciate and are grateful for Canada’s military presence in Latvia. It makes us feel even safer," said Daiga Mieriņa.
The parties discussed the need to strengthen security in our region, taking into account the threats coming from the east. The Speaker of the Saeima noted that Latvia will continue to invest in strengthening its defence capabilities. Currently, we are spending 3.66% of our gross domestic product for this purpose, and we will gradually increase our investments to reach 5% next year.
Members of the Saeima Presidium, members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee and the National Security Committee of the Saeima, as well as the Saeima Group for promoting cooperation with the Parliament of Canada visited the Ceri military base in Mārupe District, where the headquarters of the Canadian-led NATO multinational brigade in Latvia will be located, along with other brigade units.
