On Wednesday, 28 May, Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa welcomed the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, Woo Won-shik, to the Latvian Parliament to discuss opportunities for closer cooperation, particularly in the field of security. As Speaker Mieriņa emphasised, we are living in a rapidly changing and intense era, and cooperation in the area of security among like-minded partners such as Latvia and South Korea is especially important.

The Speaker of the Saeima and the South Korean Speaker agreed on the potential for closer cooperation in the field of security. Both sides also expressed unanimous support for Ukraine. As Speaker Mieriņa underlined, Latvia shares a border with an aggressor state – Russia – which poses a threat not only to our region but to the entire world. The security of the Latvian and South Korean regions is interlinked, a fact further highlighted by North Korea’s growing military support for Russia.

The two Speakers also discussed strengthening economic cooperation. Latvia is interested in developing closer contacts in the fields of biomedicine, science, timber processing, energy, and the food industry. South Korean entrepreneurs are also showing interest in the Baltic region. As Woo Won-shik noted, many companies are already expanding their business here, viewing Latvia as a regional hub that enables broader operations across all Baltic States.

Both Latvia and South Korea are also eager to foster closer ties in the field of culture. The two sides welcomed the entry into force this week of the working holiday agreement, which will provide young people from both countries with the opportunity to get to know each other’s culture and country more closely, and to establish stronger connections.

The meeting with the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea was also attended by Andris Šuvajevs, Deputy Chair of the parliamentary group for promoting cooperation with the South Korean Parliament.

Next year, Latvia and Korea will mark 35 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea is also on an official visit to Estonia and Lithuania this week.
