The European Union (EU) must be prepared to support the strengthening of its external border with Belarus. This is important not only for the security of our region, but also for the EU as a whole, said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, meeting with Ingrida Šimonytė, Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania and discussing the increase of illegal migration on the EU’s eastern border with Belarus.

The EU economic sanctions against Belarus must be introduced as soon as possible. At the same time, we must support people’s right to freely express their opinions, and continue to help Belarusian civil society, emphasised Speaker Mūrniece.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the latest developments in the parliamentary dialogue between Latvia and Lithuania, as well as the Lithuanian Presidency of the Baltic Assembly in 2021. The importance of parliamentary oversight in the implementation of major Baltic regional infrastructure projects – the synchronisation of the Baltic electricity networks and “Rail Baltica” was emphasised. Opportunities for further cooperation between the Baltic States in the fields of higher education and research were also discussed.

The Prime Minister of Lithuania also met with Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš, Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima; Jānis Vucāns, Chair of the Baltic Affairs Subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Head of the Latvian Delegation to the Baltic Assembly; and Uldis Budriķis, Head of the Group for promoting cooperation with the Parliament of Lithuania.
