Latvia expresses strong solidarity with Poland in the fight against the deliberate hybrid operation of the Belarusian regime on the external border of the European Union (EU). We - the parliamentarians of the Baltic States and Poland - must continue to actively inform the international community about the Belarusian regime's ruthless use of third-country nationals to further its political aims, said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, on Tuesday, 16 November, during a remote meeting with Elżbieta Witek, Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.
Latvia supports the introduction of even tougher EU sanctions against those who implement and facilitate this hybrid operation of the Belarusian regime. We also await specific proposals from the European Commission regarding adequate EU financial support for the reinforcement of the EU's external borders, stressed the Speaker of the Saeima.
During the meeting, the Speaker of the Polish Parliament informed about the dramatic escalation of the situation in Poland on the EU's external border with Belarus, and both parties agreed to continue active coordination between the Baltic and Polish Parliaments on this issue.
