On Friday, 6 October, having met at the Saeima, an international jury evaluated candidates for the Baltic Assembly (BA) Prize and decided to award this year's prize to Dr. Art. Arnolds Laimonis Klotiņš for his monographs “Music in Post-war Stalinism: Latvian Music Life and Creativity 1944–1953” and “Music in Exodus: Latvian Music Life and Creativity in Post-war Europe 1944–1951”.
The jury decided to award the BA Prize in Literature to translator and poet Antanas A. Jonynas for his collection of sonnets “Naujieji sonetai” (“New Sonnets”).
Meanwhile, the Prize in the Arts will be awarded to artist Peeter Laurits for his outstanding and diverse artistic work and the project “Biotoopia” (“Biotopia”).
The monetary value of each prize is EUR 5000, which will be awarded during the annual BA Session on 23 November in Tallinn.
The international jury was composed of nine experts from Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Latvia was represented by Ilze Jansone, Valdis Muktupāvels, and Orests Silabriedis.
The other nominees for the BA Prize in each category were:
in literature,
- writer and poet Rein Raud for his novel “Päikesekiri” (“The Sun Script”);
- writer Kristīne Ilziņa for her short story collection “Es neliecināšu pret jums” (“I Will Not Testify Against You”);
in the arts,
- Lithuanian State Choir “VILNIUS” for the implementation of non-traditional events and projects, innovative artistic solutions, and one of the most significant projects—the International St James Festival;
- conductor Kaspars Putniņš for his outstanding achievements in both Latvian and Baltic culture and his performance with the Latvian Radio Choir in the concert “The Dream Stream” on 31 March at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music as part of the Baltic Music Days;
in science,
- Andra Siibak, Professor of Media Studies at the University of Tartu, for her research work over the last five years (31 research contributions in total) on the opportunities and risks surrounding the use of new digital technologies.
- Jurgis Kazimieras Staniškis, initiator of transdisciplinary research and studies in the Baltic region, for his transdisciplinary research “Sustainable Development: Local and Global solutions”.
The BA Prize was established in 1994 and since then has been awarded to several well-known scientists, artists and cultural workers.
Last year, the Science Prize was awarded to Latvian scientists Gustavs Strenga, Andris Levāns, Renāte Berga, and Laura Kreigere-Liepiņa for their collective monograph “Catalogue of the Riga Jesuit College Book Collection (1583–1621): History and Reconstruction of the Collection”. Kai Aareleid, novelist and poet, received the BA Prize for Literature for her novel “Vaikne ookean” (“The Pacific Ocean”). The BA Prize for the Arts was awarded to painter Šarūnas Sauka for his unique iconography and painting principles that are closely linked to surrealism and magical realism.
