Saeima appoints Andris Saulītis to the Public Electronic Mass Media Council

On Thursday, 18 December, the Saeima appointed Andris Saulītis as a member of the Public Electronic Mass Media Council (SEPLP). Andris Saulītis is the lead researcher at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Latvia. He has previous experience working in commercial and public media. He holds a PhD in political and social sciences and is a member of the Latvian Media Ethics Council.

As stated in the decision of the Saeima, Andris Saulītis will commence his duties on the SEPLP as of 2 February 2026, after fulfilling his prior commitments.

The SEPLP consists of three members appointed by the Saeima. One member is nominated for appointment by the President of Latvia, one – by the Council for the Implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Non-Governmental Organisations and the Cabinet of Ministers, and one is nominated by at least 10 members of the Saeima.

A candidate for the SEPLP must be a citizen of Latvia with a degree of higher education and an untarnished reputation.

According to the law, the candidate nominated by the Saeima shall possess at least 5 years of professional experience in the management of capital companies. In turn, the candidates put forth by the President and the Memorandum Council; shall possess at least 5 years of professional or academic experience in the fields of mass media, education, culture, science or human rights.

Pursuant to the law, the members of the SEPLP are appointed for a term of 4 years.

The SEPLP is an independent, lawful, autonomous authority which in conformity with its competence represents the public interests in the field of public electronic mass media.
