MPs hold a debate on the country’s foreign policy

On Thursday, January 27, during a regular plenary sitting, the Saeima held a debate on foreign policy and EU matters.

Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis, Minister for Foreign Affairs, presented a report on accomplishments and planned future activities in foreign policy.

After the report by the Minister Kristovskis, 25 MPs took the floor. They included the Speaker Solvita Āboltiņa, the Deputy Speaker Gundars Daudze, as well as Kārlis Šadurskis, Secretary of the Saeima; Dzintars Rasnačs, Deputy Secretary of the Saeima; Ojārs Kalniņš, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee; Imants Lieģis, Chairman of the European Affairs Committee, and representatives from all the parliamentary groups.

Amendments to the Rules of Procedure of the Saeima that provide for conducting debates on foreign policy were adopted by the Saeima in the autumn of 2010.

Pursuant to the Rules of Procedure of the Saeima, not later than by January 16 the Minister for Foreign Affairs should submit to the Saeima the annual report, approved by the Prime Minister, on accomplishments and planned future activities in foreign policy. The report should also contain information on activities regarding European Union matters.

The Presidium includes the annual report submitted by the Minister for Foreign Affairs in the agenda of the regular plenary sitting closest to the date of international (de iure) recognition of the Republic of Latvia (January 26).
