Concluding the first day of her visit to Kyiv, the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday, 14 January.

Latvia sees promising opportunities for collaboration between entrepreneurs from both countries, particularly in jointly advancing military capabilities. Recognising the importance of ensuring sustainable peace in the region, Latvia acknowledges that it is at the beginning stages of developing its military industry but already has much to learn from and share with Ukraine. This was expressed by the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, on Tuesday, 14 January, during a meeting in Kyiv with Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal.

As the war reaches a decisive phase, Europe must assume a leading role in both Ukraine's peace process and its reconstruction. Ukraine's future within Europe is not only a matter of shared interest but also of shared responsibility. A free Ukraine in the common European family is a vision we all hold dear. This was the key message delivered by the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, on Tuesday, 14 January, in Kyiv, during her meeting with the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk.

To reduce alcohol consumption nationwide, the Saeima on Thursday, 9 January, adopted amendments to the Law on the Circulation of Alcoholic Beverages in the third and final reading. These amendments, among other things, introduce new restrictions on alcohol sales hours effective from 1 August.

Latvia highly values Italy's contribution to our national security through its military presence, which fortifies NATO's Multinational Brigade stationed in Ādaži. This effort is significant not only for our country but for the entire North Atlantic Alliance, as NATO's strength lies in collective action. This sentiment was emphasized by the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, on Monday, 23 December, during a parliamentary meeting with the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic, Lorenzo Fontana.

On Thursday, December 19, the Saeima confirmed Brigade General Kaspars Pudāns as the Commander of the National Armed Forces (NAF).

The Saeima, on Thursday, December 19, approved in the third and final reading amendments to the Law on the National Coat of Arms of Latvia, allowing the inclusion of the national coat of arms on vehicle license plates.

According to the Final Report of the Parliamentary Investigative Committee on the implementation of the "Rail Baltica" railway project, it is likely that trains will not be running in Latvia in 2030. The Saeima reviewed the Final Report of the Investigative Committee on Wednesday, 18 December.

To facilitate the application of value added tax (VAT) to small businesses offering services on foreign platforms, on Thursday, 12 December, the Saeima adopted amendments to the Value Added Tax Law in the final reading.

The National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEPLP) will be able to restrict and block pirate websites in order to better protect the works of Latvian authors and promote the legal use of content. This is foreseen in the amendments to the Copyright Law adopted by the Saeima in the final reading on Thursday, 12 December.
