Reiterating the condemnation of the unjust and brutal military attack on Ukraine, a decision was made to suspend Russia from the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC). The Heads of the Delegations to the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC) have adopted a Declaration on the suspension of the Russian parliament from the Annual Conference, the meetings of working bodies, and BSPC projects.

“Democratic values, the rule of law, and human rights are the foundation of our cooperation. As long as these fundamental principles and goals are dramatically violated by the unprovoked and brutal military attack and aggression committed by the Russian Federation against the sovereign and democratic Ukraine, we see no possibility of continuing our parliamentary cooperation with the Russian parliaments and Russian observer institutions,” said Arvils Ašeradens, Head of the Latvian delegation to the BSPC.

“Day by day, the attacks on Ukraine pose an increasingly dangerous threat to peace, stability and democracy across Europe and the world. They defy the rights and freedoms of all Europeans, not just those of Ukrainian citizens,” said Jānis Vucāns, the current representative of the Baltic Assembly at the BSPC.

The Declaration underlines that Russian attacks on Ukraine are contrary to both international law and European security. They violate the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the basic principles of international and humanitarian law. As pointed out in the Declaration, this war has triggered the biggest humanitarian crisis in Europe since the Second World War.

Information about the BSPC
The BSPC is a parliamentary forum of the Baltic Sea region. It was established in 1991 at the initiative of Finland with the aim of building a common identity within the Baltic Sea region by increasing cooperation between the countries and municipalities of the region. This organisation brings together the national and regional parliaments of the countries on the coast of the Baltic Sea, as well as the Baltic Assembly, the European Parliament, and the Nordic Council.
