In solidarity with the people of Israel and to honour the victims of last weekend’s terrorist attack, the flag of the State of Israel was raised at the main building of the Saeima on Monday, 9 October.

Today at 16:00, Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, members of the Saeima Presidium, Sharon Rappaport Palgi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Israel to the Republic of Latvia, and Anatolii Kutsevol, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Ukraine to the Republic of Latvia, gathered by the Saeima building for a symbolic show of support.

“Whenever something like this unfolds, we realise that no one in this world is safe. Any of us could find ourselves in a similar situation. We can show solidarity in support of the people facing these circumstances—the people of Ukraine, the people of Israel—and do everything in our power so that this war would end as soon as possible,” said Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, paying her deepest respects and expressing her heartfelt condolences to the people of Israel.

To underline that the international community must not lose sight of the developments in Ukraine, the flag of Ukraine flies next to the flag of Israel.

In the morning of Saturday, 7 October, the terrorist organisation Hamas launched an attack on Israel. More than a thousand people have already been killed in the attack, most of them civilians, including children.

Already on Saturday, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima adopted a statement strongly and categorically condemning the terrorist attacks on Israel by Hamas, reaffirming its unwavering support for Israel, and expressing condolences to the families of the victims. According to the statement, Israel has the right to self-defence and the right and duty to defend its citizens and its country against deadly acts of terrorism.
