“We believe that Ukraine will win, and the next time when we gather here, the mood will be different - we will commemorate the heroes and all those who fought selflessly for us all - for Latvia, for Ukraine,” said Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, on Saturday, 24 February, in her address at the event Together until Victory! at the Freedom Monument, honouring the victims of the war in Ukraine.

Today marks two years since Russia’s brutal invasion in Ukraine, and back then everyone was in shock and disbelief that such events could unfold right here, in Europe, said Mieriņa, emphasising that no words can adequately describe Russia’s actions, just as no words can fully convey the depth of our pain.

“We know what to expect from this aggressor, as shown by the grim pages of our own history - we have experienced genocide and Russification spanning multiple decades,” said the Speaker of the Saeima, affirming that our one and only wish today is to finally turn this dreadful page of history and start a new one.

The Speaker of the Saeima thanked all the participants who had come to honour and commemorate the people fighting selflessly for our freedom and doing their utmost to support Ukrainian victory.
